Instagram Updates: April 2026
1. The reach signals that actually matter now: watch time + DM shares + saves (likes barely move the needle)
What's new
Adam Mosseri's been confirming that Instagram's 2026 algorithm is running on a clear hierarchy of signals
Here's the breakdown:
- Watch time is the #1 overall ranking signal (Mosseri originally confirmed this back in January 2025, and it still holds — the first 3 seconds are critical)
- DM shares are the strongest signal for reaching NEW audiences — Ex: getting your content outside your existing follower base
- Saves carry significant weight — reportedly correlating with purchase intent about 3x stronger than likes

How to implement / strategize
A few specific moves to make this month:
- Audit your last 10 posts and ask one question: would my ICA hit "send" on this to her friend? If the answer is no, that's why your reach is down. Reframe future content around the share test — pretend every post needs to live or die on whether someone DMs it to a friend.
- Lead with the "wait, you NEED to see this" angle. The hooks that drive shares aren't "5 tips for X." They're "POV: you're a [ICA] and you've been doing [thing] all wrong." Or "I wish someone had told me this before I [thing]." Specific. Pattern-interrupting. Send-worthy.
- Profile clicks are important. Make sure your bio, pinned posts, and link-in-bio are all set up to convert when someone actually does click through. If they land on a profile that doesn't immediately tell them what you do and where to go next, you're losing the warmest traffic Instagram is sending you
2. "Your Algorithm" rolled out to Explore for all English-language users
What's new
On April 17, Instagram rolled out its "Your Algorithm" controls to the Explore tab for all English-language users globally. This was previously only available in Reels (since December 2025). Users can now hit a "+" button at the top of Explore and add or remove specific topics — things like "Painting," "Pop Music," "Thrifting" — to tell Instagram what they actually want to see, instead of just relying on browsing history
Instagram also confirmed that Reels and Explore now share a single recommendation system, so changes a user makes on one surface affect both

Why it matters for you
Honestly? My opinion is that most users won't actually dig in and customize this. But the ones who do are telling Instagram exactly what kinds of accounts to push them toward. So if your content is clearly, unmistakably about ONE thing — let's say, "email marketing for moms with digital products" — and someone tells the algorithm they want more of that topic, you're now significantly more likely to land in front of them
What this really means is niche clarity just got more valuable than ever. If your feed is a chaotic mix of motherhood content, business content, lifestyle, food, and travel, the algorithm has no clear topic to file you under. But if your feed is laser-focused on one transformation, the algorithm now has a much cleaner way to match you to the people actively asking for that content
How to implement / strategize
- Run a topic-clarity audit on your grid:Â If a stranger landed on your profile and only saw your last 9 posts, would they know exactly what you teach and who you teach it to? If they have to scroll or guess, you have a niching problem
- Use specific topic language in your captions and on-screen text: The algorithm reads everything — your text, your hashtags (yes, still), your audio, your captions. Use the actual words your ICA would type into Explore if she was searching for what you teach.
- Don't overthink the user-side feature:Â You don't need to do anything with "Your Algorithm" as a creator. You just need to know it exists and that it rewards clarity. Show up clearly, stay on topic, and you benefit from it without doing anything extra
Features in Testing:
1- Instagram is testing a new highlights story features that displays highlights from profiles you follow as stories (as a way to catch up if you missed the original content)
2- Wipe your algorithm clean: this will let users wipe their recommendations on the Explore, Reels, and Feed tabs, generating a fresh slate of suggestions. It will also allow users to review their follow list, filtering out accounts that no longer interest them
Plan ahead and mark your calendar!
