Instagram Updates: June 2026

Shares are now king, original content gets distribution, reposts get buried

What's new this month:

Instagram rolled out (announced in April, fully rolling out through May/June) a rebalance of how the algorithm distributes content. The big shifts:

  • Shares (DM sends) are now the #1 ranking signal. One DM share is now worth roughly 15 likes in distribution score. Saves are next, worth roughly 10 likes each. Watch time and profile clicks round out the top four. Likes and follower count both lost weight
  • Original content gets ranked higher than reposts or stock. If you shot it, designed it, or meaningfully altered it — you get a boost. If you reposted someone else's reel or used the same Canva template the algorithm has seen 8,000 times — you get buried
  • Longer Reels (up to 3 minutes) can now appear in Explore, and carousels now support up to 20 slides

Features in Testing/New Features:

Built-in teleprompter for Reels: A scrolling script overlay built right into the Reels camera — paste your script, hit record, read it off the screen while looking straight at the camera. No more third-party apps or memorizing — film polished talking-head Reels in one take.

Reorder carousel slides after posting: You can now drag-and-drop reorder slides on a carousel that's already published (three dots → Edit → long-press → drag), without losing any of your existing likes, shares, or comments. Lets you fix a buried CTA slide or move your best hook to the front after you see how the post is performing.

Longer Reels up to 20 minutes (testing in US): Instagram is testing YouTube-length Reels with a small group of US creators, aimed at tutorials, vlogs, and mini-trainings. If it rolls out wide, Reels become a real teach-and-sell format — full masterclass plus a pitch at the end, native to IG.

"Your Algorithm" — user-controlled Reels interests: Users can now manually pick their top 3 Reels interests, telling Instagram exactly what to show them
